Michael Elwyn
Born 1943

Michael Elwyn was born in South Wales, the son of a minister, but his fathers calling took the family to Warwickshire for the next 20 years.

He first became interested in acting at school but rather than drama school he attended Oxford - his contemporaries included Michael York, Michael Palin and Terry Jones. Michael's first TV Appearance was in Midlands soap Crossroads playing an Irish television engineer for two episodes, He also appeared in another sixties soap, The Newcomers (in which he declined a regular role) and was a prolific TV actor in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's, taking the lead in drama the Carnforth Practice and appearing in series such as The Avengers, Doomwatch, Colditz, Rumpole of the Bailey and Inspector Wexford. He also appeared in many films, his first being an adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall alongside Donald Sinden and many others, including The French Lieutenants Woman and A Touch Of Class, He was also prolific in the theatre, playing roles such as Macbeth and Richard II.

For a period in the 1970's Michael lived next door to then current Doctor Who Tom Baker, who he found an interesting neighbour and who also brought the realisation that Doctor Who was still a popular programme. Michael appeared with Tom in Selling Hitler, though he never met Tom on set. He appeared with other Doctor Who's Jon Pertwee (in One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing) and Colin Baker (in The Carnforth Practice and The Brothers).

One photo that is sadly missing from the reconstruction is a photo Michael's father took off the television screen during the initial screening of the Highlanders of Michael as Ffinch smoking a pipe, Michael gave this photo to a Doctor Who fanzine editor but can't remember who and unfortunately never kept a print.

Michael is still a regular on our screens to this day, having a recurring role in Bad Girls and making guest appearances in shows such as Midsomer Murders and Rosemary and Thyme, as well as a major role in the revived series of Robin Hood, in which he appeared alongside another member of the Troughton acting dynasty, Patrick Troughton's grandson, Sam.

Michael Elwyn provides the introduction for the Doctor Who reconstruction - Loose Cannon 27 - The Highlanders and also is the focus of an interview that accompanies the reconstruction.
