Doomwatch is an overtly critical expression of its creators distrust of scientific developments. In Doomwatch John Paul plays Doctor Spencer Quist, a driven man who who occupys a desk opposite a glowering triptych of nuclear test photographs. Quist seeks redemption for his part in the Manhattan Project and absolution for the death of his wife from leukemia. By challenging government and corporations alike, Quist is a symbolic figure, reminding the audience that whilst they, like him, have lived under the shadow of the Bomb, the world is being poisened by less spectacular but equally catastrophic means.
