Dr Kit Pedler talks to reporter Michelle Brown about technology and its impact on the environment, expressing his anxieties about the effect of such developments as mass air travel on dwindling energy resources. He explains his decision to use the BBC series Doomwatch to dramatise some of his concerns and to spur viewers to demand action. He argues that harnessing other forms of energy such as solar or wind power offer better alternatives, demonstrates a model of a self-sufficient home using such technology and suggests that the role of the scientist in the future is to develop more appropriate means to satisfy mankind's primary needs: "food, warmth, shelter and mobility".
