MATTHEW COADY'S VIEW

If you are as addicted to BBC 1's Doomwatch as I am, try BBC-2's Heritage series. Here, stripped of those ingenious plots, are the basic threats that tend to preoccupy the fictional Dr. Quist. Last week it was the problem of too many people – with talk of population control. Last night it was a grim insistence that fresh air is becoming increasingly scarce. It's a sort of documentary thriller all the more ominous because of its quiet appraisal of the facts. The villains – sulphur dioxide and the rest – may be invisible but they chilled me. Dr. Quist! Dr. Ridge! Doomwatchers! HELP!
